HE’S NO CHURCHILL, THE WAR IN IRAN.

I’m sure my views on this subject will be influenced by my age, upbringing and to a certain extent, the fact that my grandfather fought in the First World War and my father fought in the Second World War, together with a decent smattering of black and white films such as ‘The Dam Busters’ and ‘In which we serve.’

Apparently, historians estimate that in the past 3500 years only a few hundred years were completely free of major conflicts and a total absence of war is virtually non existant in history, so this recent outbreak in Iran is merely a blip in history. This being the case, I suppose one has to accept it as being the norm. The previous statements were my justifcation for taking up what might in this day and age be considered the stance of a war mongering bastard.

It’s no wonder we have not been visited by other civilisations from outer space, for surely they may have come and had a look and thought, ‘I’m not going to land there, they’re all killing each other, it’s safer with the Klingons!’ To qualify that comment, I have to say, I was never a big Star Trek fan so I may be doing the Klingons an injustace as they could be kind peacful people but I’m really basing it on the wonderful tune where the Klingons are to be found on the starboard bow.

Getting back to Iran, I’m old enough to remember when it appeared to be a fairy modern, progressive and free society with young girls in mini skirts with all the freedoms offered by a society like that. Although I have to admit whilst I remember the overthrow of the Shah of Iran in the 1979 Islamic Revolution I hadn’t remembered why, but with the help of a google search it seems it was due to widespread discontent with his autocratic rule, intense corruption, and rapid, forced Westernization, but comparing that to what replaced it, I can’t for the life of me see why anyone would have thought this current regime was an improvement.

Call me naieve if you like but I take a very simple view of the war in that, here is a regime ruled by nutters who are attempting to make a nuclear bomb with the avowed intent of obliterating most of the free world and yes, I am aware that there are plenty of other nutters in the free world who currently have nuclear weapons but we assume they are not quite nutty enough to use them. Let’s hope so!

I notice I have digressed somewhat from the title of this post, so back to the subject in hand, the rather weak Prime Minister, Mr Starmer who I have to say couldn’t organise a cocktail party in an off licence. Dithering about sending a boat to help the Americans and yet he manages to send a constant supply of boats to pick up the illegal migrants on a daily basis. Dithering as to whether to allow the Americans to use our bases and then finally changing his mind to allow them to fly from them whilst pretending we are not in the war.

With the price of petrol through the roof the government must be making a fortune for they have not altered the tax on petrol and in fact seem to have every intent to put it up in the near future and with the VAT still at the same level with these inflated prices Mr Starmer is coining it in while we suffer whilst he pretends to be a friend of the poor and less well off. In Australia they have already reduced the level of VAT and what does Mr Starmer do, yes you’re right, more dithering!

Mr Trump has criticised Starmer for his lack of help from another NATO country and quite rightly, although I believe he muddled his facts suggesting we were late into World War Two whereas in fact it was the Americans who finally joined in some two years and three months late on the 8th December 1941 following the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbour the previous day. Credit where credit is due though, if it weren’t for the Americans ability to mass produce weapons, we would have lost, although we might have had a little more help when it came to paying for them, as with the interest added we only finally paid off the debt in December 2006.

I fear there will come a time in the future where the tardiness of Mr Starmer and the rest of Europe with regard to their lateness and lack of help for America will cost us dear, but who knows. Certainly, should we be requiring assistance whislt Mr Trump is still in power, I feel we will be in deep doodoo for Mr Trump does not forget these things and hell hath no fury like a ‘Trump’ scorned.

About The Diary of a Country Bumpkin

I am a retired actor, although to be honest I only retired because I wasn't getting any work due to losing my agent when I became a full time carer to my mother who had dementia. and the option of becoming an unemployed actor/waiter at my age was ludicrous, especially as my waiting skills are non-existent. Having said I’m retired, I don’t think there really is such a thing as a retired actor for I am still available for work, I just don’t have an agent or any connections with regards to obtaining any worthwhile work. I have over the years done student films when there is nothing else available, always low paid (if at all) the only incentive was always the promised copy of the finished film for your show reel which nine times out of ten always failed to materialise. I spent many years looking after my aged mother and shortly after her death I was lucky enough to run into an ex-girlfriend of many years ago and our romance blossomed once again, resulting in us getting married in 2013. My move to the countryside inspired me to write The Diary of a Country Bumpkin which tells of my continuing dilemmas in dealing with the rigors of the countryside from the unexpectedly large number of pollens, fungal moulds and hay products waiting to attack the unsuspecting townie. I enjoy writing, see my play Dulce Et Decorum Est Pro Patria Mori on The Wireless Theatre Company, The Plays Wot I Wrote and The Battle of Barking Creek both available on Amazon.co.uk and am very fond of classic cars so my ideal occupation would be acting in a film I had written set in the 1930s/40s, we live in hopes. I am delighted to say that since venturing to the countryside where space is not quite the premium it is in town, I have due to the availability of two double garages acquired more classic cars to form a small collection the pride of which are a 1947 Bentley Mk VI and a 2000 Bentley Arnage. My various blogs and websites are continually evolving and I’m sure that by following the appropriate links you will find something which will edify or amuse. I have written a number of different books all available on Amazon, so don't be shy should you feel the urge to purchase. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Mr-Joe-Wells/e/B06XKWFQHT/ref=dp_byline_cont_book_1

  1. Neil Bailey's avatar Neil Bailey says:

I am of the same generation, with a WW1 Grandfather and a WW2 father, but I disagree about your criticism of our Prime Minister. Entering a war without a clarity of objectives, without a strategy, and without the support of allies would have been rash and dangerous to the UK. I don’t usually rush to defend Starmer, but on this I think he has handled the situation well, calmly and rationally.
If you study Persian/Iranian history, the nationalisation of the Anglo-Iranian oil production facilities by a democratically elected government resulted in a US/UK overthrow of that government and the installation of a western-leaning Shah. Unfortunately the Shah was corrupt, and his people eventually rebelled in 1979, resulting in the return of the exiled Ayatollah – to rapturous acclaim by the Iranians. However, theocracy is no substitute for democracy, and your observations of the wisdom of that change are valid. The way to deal with the problem is not bombing or sanctions, and requires cool rational thought, and a policy based on achievable outcomes and a strategy to deliver them. Rational is not a word associated with Trump, but just might be true for Starmer.
